Movie Review: Coolie No. 1 - Varun Dhawan, Sara Ali Khan Fail to Impress

After 25 years of delivering the superhit movie 'Coolie No. 1', David Dhawan and Vashu Bhagnani have successfully delivered the sequel to the 1995 film titled with the same name 'Coolie. No 1'. The latest movie features Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan recreating the roles of Govinda and Karisma Kapoor, however, the audience seem to prefer the 90s stars over the Varun-Sara duo. The announcement of the 2020 film imbibed tremendous anticipation, curiosity and happiness amid fans, however it looks like all attempts of the team have failed miserably. The movie premiered on Amazon Prime Video on the occasion of Christmas i.e., 25 December, 2020 and has garnered a Star Rating of 1.5 star.

Plot: Coolie No. 1 is a remake of the 1995 film with the same name 'Coolie No. 1'. The movie features Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan in prominent roles, along with Paresh Rawal, Javed Jaffrey, Rajpal Yadav, Johnny Lever, Sahil Vaid, Vikas Verma, Manoj Joshi. Varun Dhawan essays the prominent role of Raju Coolie/ Kunwar Raj Pratap Singh, while Sara Ali Khan essays Sarah Rozario, his love interest. The movie starts with a matchmaker, Jai Kishen (Javed Jaffrey) who gets insulted by a rich businessman named Jeffery Rozario (Paresh Rawal). The insult imbibes in the matchmaker a feeling of revenge following which hegets the businessman’s daughter, Sarah (Sara Ali Khan) married to a Coolie (Varun Dhawan). The film has a twist as Raju Coolie pretends to be a millionaire and dons the name Kunwar Raj Pratap Singh. Later, Raju's lie is caught following which he weaves weaves multiple lies. The situation eventually goes out of control.

Review: Coolie No. 1 is not as promising as fans expected it to be. The 2020 comedy-drama film is nowhere close to the 1995 superhit as fans have been left disappointed. While Coolie No. 1 tries hard to make the audience laugh, the Varun and Sara duo has been unable to recreate the magic that Govinda and Karisma weaved together. Moreover, the 2020 film receiving a digital premiere unfortunately missed the repeated whistles and cheering that Coolie No. 1 otherwise won back in the 90s. Varun Dhawan is in his original enthusiasm and energy throughout the film, unable to make fans laugh. Sara Ali Khan on the other hand plays the bubbly character that she naturally is, however, she has failed to impress the public this time. The 2020 Coolie No. 1 is an upgraded version with upgraded songs, dialogues, scenes, story, however, none match the magic of those that impressed the nation years back. The plot of a father looking for a rich man for his daughter, revenge, a man lying about his wealth have all been adopted and dropped by makers long back.

Direction: David Dhawan has delivered a number of hits, following which fans have always looked forward to his directorial. While the director created a masterpiece back in 1995, David Dhawan miserably failed to impress the audience and leave fans in splits. The premiere of the sequel suggests that the 1995 movie should have been spared as the happiness on the faces of fans in 1995 is unfortunately missing this time.

Why to Watch: A slight recreation to the 1995 film is still present, while the songs have been recreated, the songs are there. Moreover, Coolie No. 1 features Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan opposite each other for the first time, following which fans might as well witness the actors opposite each other. The movie is easily accessible on Amazon Prime Video. Above all, witness the sequel for yourselves and decide your take on the movie.
