One of the top 20 theatres of the country, Akshara Theatre, which is on the verge of going dark due to pending electricity dues has now started an online crowd funding campaign for financial support.
Officer of the theatre said, 'Electricity department has send 3 Lakhs bill, which he was unable to give by March, the last date for payment.
Actress Jalbala Vaidya, one of the founder members of the theatre said, 'We got the bill of 3 Lakhs from the department, but we were unable to give such huge amount, but somehow we managed 2 lakhs, which the electricity department accepted after much pleading.
Theatre has received a notice in which it is told that the theatre’s lights will be switched off if the pending bill of Rs 4 lakh is not paid by March 15.
Vaidya said that we have got 3 lakhs bill from the department few days back and were unable to pay it, so it exceeded to 4 lakhs.
Now the theatre has started an online crowd funding campaign at BitGiving inviting donations to save itself from going dark. Since it is a registered, non-profit Theatre Society donations attract exemption from income-tax under Section 80G.
Many actors of Indians and foreign have come out to help the theatre, even many students of Akshara also stood up for the campaign.
