Famous film actor Manoj Kumar was failed twice to get Dadasaheb Phalke award and finally current debate on nationalism for veteran actor Manoj Kumar, helped him to win the Dadasaheb Phalke award, the highest Indian honour for contribution to cinema. The actor is best known for doing many patriotic films.
Bhajan singer and BJP member Anup Jalota said, who was a member of the I&B ministry-constituted jury, Manoj Ji could have made films like Sholey, but he only told us that Country love is so important. At times such as now when there is opposition to even saying Bharat Mata Ki Jai, Manoj Kumar's movies will guide misguided youth and bring them closer to their motherland.'
Further he said, 'this year the jury unanimous recommended Kumar's name for the highest award in Indian cinema. Kumar who did films like Purab Aur Paschim, Upkar and Kranti, his name was taken last year also for this award. But filmmakers Gulzar, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Jahnu Barua, singer Asha Bhonsle and lyricist Prasoon Joshi decided to give this award to Shashi Kapoor.
Source told that Kumar name was considered in 2012, but the jury finally decided to give the award to 93-year-old Pran, one official told, ' The UPA government was in favour to honour Manoj Kumar but the jury went ahead with other names.
In jury Members, apart from Jalota, Salim Khan, Laga Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and Nitin Mukesh were also there. WIth this award, you get Swarn Kamal (golden lotus), a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh and a shawl. Till now total 46 artist have been given this award, including Satyajit Ray, Shyam Benegal, Ashok Kumar, Shivaji Ganesan and Dilip Kumar.
